The Basics of Pad Printing

A key factor in the quality of a printed item is the pad printing plate, which is an etched flat plate that holds the image to be printed. The process starts with etching depressions on the surface of the plate. When a smooth silicon pad is pressed against the plate, ink will transfer from the etched area of the pad to the product or object being decorated.

The type of plate used in a pad printing application depends on the desired output and the number of colors to be printed. Both polymer and steel cliches are available, with each offering distinct benefits and drawbacks. Polymer cliches are made of photopolymer materials and offer a cost-effective solution for moderate print runs. They are durable and produce high-resolution prints with fine detail. They do, however, have the restriction that they cannot follow strong rounding on a curved product.

Laser etching is another option for creating pad printing plates. This method offers the advantage of a fast etching time, with each plate taking only about 5 minutes to create. It also offers precision and consistency in the etching depth, which is crucial for producing high-quality, highly repeatable plates. A good laser etching partner should be able to guarantee a precise etching depth up to +/-2 microns and a multi-point quality inspection report.

It is important to store unexposed plates in a dark photographic bag away from sunlight, humidity, and moisture to prevent them from fading over time. They should also be stored flat to prevent warping or other damage, and only be exposed for short periods of time under a UV filtered light. The plates should also be trimmed to the desired size before exposure.

Pad printing inks must be matched to specific PMS color requirements to ensure consistency, but they also need to have the right viscosity to help transfer ink from the etchings on the pad printing plate to the object being decorated. Solvents are added to the inks to adjust their viscosity and aid the ink transfer. They must also be matched to the environment, with faster-evaporating solvents for cold environments and slower-evaporating solvents that have a higher oil content for warmer environments. These variables are all critical to the final print quality of a pad printed product. They can greatly impact the durability, accuracy, and printability of a product.
