What Is a Sheet Feeder Plant?

A sheet feeder plant manufactures corrugated paper but does not convert it into boxes on the premises.sheet feeder plant Instead, it sells its product to converting plants that do the cutting, creaseing, printing and glueing. These converting plants can be full-line or box plants that purchase the sheet feeder's product for conversion into finished packaging. The term "sheet feeder" also refers to the device at the front of a corrugated die cutter or flexo folder gluer where sheet stock is loaded, or inserted, into the machine for conversion into finished packaging.

A corrugated sheet feeder is designed for the precise feeds required of platen style converting machines, like the rotary die-cutters and flexo folding carton gluers that use flat plates to cut and fold a stack into a finished box.sheet feeder plant A sheet feeder's feed wheels work in conjunction with shingle rollers to accumulate the sheet stock into stacks that are then conveyed to the converting machines where designs and branding are printed and the corrugated is cut into the proper dimensions for each customer’s needs.

The rotary die-cutters and flexos use a cylindrical or flat die to cut the box blanks, respectively, and then apply heat and pressure to a glued surface to bond it together. The rotary die-cutters can produce multiple boxes from a single cut sheet, while the flexos require a separate cutting operation to make individual boxes for each order.

In the past, some integrated corrugated companies owned both full-line plants and sheet feeders to get the best price on containerboard from their mills, but that strategy is no longer as profitable as it once was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Integrated paper companies now partner with independent box producers to supply their corrugated through consortiums. This is a challenging business, as the different motivations and philosophies of each partner can sometimes cause conflicts. Responsiveness, however, is critical to the success of these partnerships as it reduces customers' lead times and helps the supplier to capitalize on higher selling prices for value added packaging.
